Welcome to the 2019/20120 ski season!

Hope everyone had a great and adventurous summer. Now that the kids are getting into their daily routines, we're focusing on getting our registration open for this year. We expect to open the club registration by early October. If you want to be notified when you can register, please email the club at info@bowwatersjackrabbits.org.

Through September, the schedule will be updated for this season, as well as anything new that comes up for this year.

Temperatures are going to be cold in Canmore

This Sunday, we are skiing, but temperatures are predicted to be hovering around -18ish with wind chill. Remember to dress warm and make sure you've got your hand and toe warmers. The good news is it will be sunny! A couple more things:

  • We'll be posting some times and places where we are skiing on the Family Day weekend. These are not mandatory or official lessons, but you're welcome to join us if you like.
  • Remeber to let Shannon know if you'll be joining the club at the Lake Louise Loppet- March 3/4 weekend, for our club dinner at the Lake Louise Inn. Don't forget to book your place at the Lake Louise Inn or near-by accommodations.

Enjoy our ski!

Dress warm Bow Waters!

We're getting into some colder temperatures, so please make sure to dress warm. Every skier should have a backpack that they can ski with. In it, please put an extra pair of mitts, snack and water. Also, with temperatures expecting to be colder over the next couple of weeks, those chemical hand and toe warmers will come in handy. They make a big difference. You can pick them up at any outdoor store and probably at many grocery stores. Costco sells them by the box for around $15.

Happy 2018, and all the snow that came with it!

With January upon us, we’re back on our skis and this time with lots of snow. January will be a great month with lots of different ski locations. Make sure to check our EVENTS CALENDAR web page to keep track on where we’ll be skiing on each Sunday.

Also, every year our club makes an effort to participate in the Lake Louise Loppet. This year, it’s on Sunday, March 4. We’ll be sending out reminder emails to the club on hotel booking, family ski tour, and club dinner details. Whether you come out for the Friday and Saturday night, or just the Saturday night, it’s a great opportunity to get to the mountains for a weekend vacation, while experiencing one of Canada’s oldest running Loppets, in one of the most popular (and beautiful?) international vacation destinations.

See you on the trails!

Any questions? Please email us at bwjackrabbits@gmail.com.

Annual AGM

This year, the club executive is hosting the Bow Waters AGM on Sunday, April 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westgate Community Hall (4943 8 Avenue S.W.). It's an opportunity for the club members to convene in a more formal manner to debrief the season that was, lessons-learned, fill in roles that may need filling for next season, and hear feedback/suggestions from club members on items we should consider for next year.

Oh, and we need to go over the budget, too. With that, if there are any accountants in the club, who wouldn't mind volunteering their time and accountant-brains to review and approve the budget before we send it in to Service Alberta this year, let me know.

We'll also be premiering our annual club slideshow (directed, shot, and produced by Stephen Sauder; starring YOU) and handing out your children's report card posters. Kids are welcome and encouraged. It's always great to see everyone and fun for the kids to see the year-end video. There's a playground outside, where we'll have a parent or two hanging with the kids.

Its'a pot luck!

It's a potluck lunch, family affair, so when you confirm your attendance (email bwjackrabbits@gmail.com), let me know what dish you'll be bringing so I can keep track. If it starts to look like we're only having Superstore-salads-in-a-bag for lunch, I'll just reply to you and let you know we have enough Superstore-salads-in-a-bag. Also, for those surplus cookie medals from Sports Day, if you froze them, bring them. We'll eat them.

I'll send out an email the week leading up to the event with the minutes from last year's AGM, plus an agenda for this year's meeting.

Sports Day: March 12- this year on snow!

We're super keen to have Sports Day at the Canmore Nordic Centre this year (and during the Canadian National Biathlon championships, no less!). For the sake of ordering food for everyone, please register your family at the Eventbrite registration web page so we make sure there's enough lunch for everyone. Some of you have already emailed me that you are coming, but please still register at Eventbrite site so we can keep our numbers straight. The club activities will run from 10 a.m.-noon, followed by lunch.

Family Day weekend ski tour: Sunday, February 19

We don't have an official lesson this Sunday, but I'll be leading a Bow Waters family ski tour at Shark mountain (weather permitting) on Sunday at 11 a.m. If you travel past the Canmore Nordic Centre on Spray Lakes Trail, you'll find the turnoff about 20-30 min past the Nordic Centre, just past Spray Lake. It's a great opportunity to try a new ski area, if you haven't been up there. It's tracked for both classic and skate, so you've got options. There is no warming hut so please dress for the weather. The more the merrier.

World Snow Day - Jan 15, 2017

Conveniently, our next lesson (Jan. 15) lands on World Snow Day. It's the second phase of the 'Bring Children to the Snow' campaign. It seeks to motivate children aged from 4-14 by encouraging everyone to celebrate all things snow around the world simultaneously. The Canmore Nordic Centre is excited to participate in this spectacular event. Kids ski for free, costume prizes (I dare ya!), and more! I expect the Nordic Centre will be busy, but we'll still have our room upstairs for the club.

Buffs are in!! If you ordered them, we'll have them at the next few lessons for you to pick up.

Confederation Park mid-week ski

We're going to try a club ski next Wednesday night (Jan. 18) at Confederation Park (3204 Collingwood Dr. N.W., just off 19 St N.W., across from Canmore Park). We'll meet around 6 p.m. and try to get on skis by 6:15. It's not a mandatory ski or an official lesson, but we'll have a few of our coaches out there if families want to come and participate for an hour or so. We'll send out a confirmation email by end of day Tuesday next week to confirm. If you think you can make it, please email bwjackrabbits@gmail.com so we can get a sense for numbers.

Lake Louise Loppet - Sunday, March 5, 2017

Hosted by the Calgary Ski Club, the Bow Waters Jackrabbits club joins other ski clubs and ski enthusiasts from across North America each year to participate in this popular x-country ski race. Our club makes it a weekend affair with a Saturday afternoon family ski tour, followed by a club dinner early in the evening before the big race Sunday morning.

The Loppet Registration is now open and we've got a club discount on rooms at the Lake Louise Inn. If you choose to stay at the Inn, here's the low down:

  • ·  We have a discount for the nights of March 3 (Friday night) and March 4 (Saturday night)
  • ·  Call 1-800-661-9237 to reserve no later than 14 days prior to your first night stay (you can stay 1 or 2 nights)
  • ·  Prices range from $104-$269 a room
  • ·  When you call, mention you are with the Bow Waters Ski Club and request the club rate
  • ·  There are no rooms blocked off, so it's first come, first serve

If the Lake Louise Inn isn't your fancy, you can also book at the Lake Louise Hostel, which is just across the street, or head to the number of online accommodation booking sites to find something that's more your comfort and style.

Over the next few weeks, we'll update you on the time and location of the Saturday (March 4) club ski tour and the club dinner.

Jan 8th, 2017 - Lessons canceled due to cold - Family ski option

Hi Bow Waters Jackrabbits families,
In spite of the relentless cold temperatures we're seeing for tomorrow (Sunday, January 8), there's a few of us families who are still going to head out for a ski from the Pocaterra warming hut. It won't be an official coached session, but it will be fun to get out and enjoy the mountains on skis. We'll be at the warming hut around 11 a.m. and then head out around 11:30 a.m. The more the merrier.
And another thing: the buffs are in!!! Yes! If you ordered a buff when you registered, we'll make sure to bring them to our next session. They're a great accessory and will come in handy, especially for this season. Keep warm and hope to see you on trails.
